If anyone gets #5 wrong I will probably consider giving them an F for the quarter.

Some students put down the wrong answers and I had stern talks with all of them.
It also had the unfortunate consequence of causing one student to sing Rack City randomly throughout class, which got really annoying after awhile.

Great Lesson Observation Today

I had a great lesson+observation today and wanted to share.

We’re starting Westward Expansion.  I had the students ‘popcorn read’ the relevant section of the textbook.  It has a lot of fun/attention grabbing aspects like “mountain men lopped the heads off their dogs in order to drink their blood to survive” and “children played with buffalo dung in a manner that was the precursor to the frisbee.” It also touched on lots of motivations to move out West, which aligned really well with the curriculum standards.

Then we read a primary source from the Sager Family who went out on the Oregon Trail and had terrible luck, as nearly everyone died or was injured.  So I think they got a really good feel for what it was like to travel out West and how dangerous it was.

And then I explained to them that some wagons had ‘bumper stickers’ (more like signs) attached to them and asked them to create their own bumper stickers for their wagons based on some aspect that we read about today.  Which resulted in stuff like:

  • 1 dog down, 4 to go on the way to Oregon (insinuating that they were eating the dogs, or at least drinking the dog blood to survive)
  • Go Oregon Trail Escape Religion!!! (I don’t think he quite understood what the Mormons were trying to do)
  • My ox will pull this ox
  • Drink blood or die!
  • We Drink our Dog’s blood

Well.  At least they will never forget that pioneers drank dog blood.  That is a true Enduring Understanding.

Trail of Tears Journals

Last week I had my students read four primary sources (one from a Cherokee woman, one from a female African American slave, and two from white male soldiers) about their experiences on the Trail of Tears, and then write a journal entry from the perspective of one of them.

And they’ve all turned out really great.  I am really impressed and so happy.  They all “got it” and some produced really powerful and insightful journal entries.

Often it is stressful and depressing but then sometimes this happens and it is all completely worth it.

Full Time Student Teaching Day 4

My mentor teacher had an emergency during homeroom and had to leave, and was gone until several minutes before school ended.  So that was interesting/scary!  It turned out fine and I feel a lot better about the prospect of one day teaching by myself.  Also I didn’t have to teach 4/5A today which was a relief because IDK what to do with that class.  Tomorrow I am going to switch around a lot of seats and go from there.

I think I was most proud of myself for not forgetting to do attendance within the first five minutes of every class.

Also, I wore white pants and a blue oxford shirt, and students commented that I “was not dressing weird today, like not a lot of crazy colors.”  I feel like I let them down :/

Full Time Student Teaching Day 2
Just another day of indoctrinating students with communist propaganda (via discussing how slaveowners used religion to control their slaves via only giving sermons on Bible passages that discussed servitude and respecting masters).
Lunch today was awesome.  Some students said some funny things that I can’t remember and meant to write down.  Oh well.
Need to figure out a way to deal with 4/5A.  Lots of strong personalities in the class that on their own are enjoyable and fun, but when combined control the classroom and make it difficult to manage.  Blehhhh.
But a good day.  Had a discussion about the folk spiritual Follow the Drinking Gourd which turned out well, and the students enjoyed listening to music in class.
